Context

Known as the Marvelous City, Rio de Janeiro is located in southeastern Brazil. With a humid tropical climate, the city features plains, hills, and mountains, often experiencing high temperatures and numerous sunny days. "RJ" is renowned for its natural beauty, impressive cultural and urban landscapes, cultural expressions, and the infectious energy of its inhabitants, known as cariocas.

As depicted in Fernanda Abreu's song, “Rio 40 graus”:

— Wonderful city, purgatory of beauty and chaos. —

Rio is a city of contrasts, blending beauty, history, art, culture, talent, and remarkable individuals. It is characterized by a variety of realities and experiences, with significant social, economic, and political disparities, social inequality, and violence. Essentially, it is a mixture of positive and negative aspects.

My Roots

Within this context, specifically in the city's peripheral areas, I was born and raised. From a very young age, I was acquainted with all these perspectives and also with the carioca aesthetic. (Straight talk! A sun for each person. What do you say, shall we go to the beach today?)

The History of the Bikini in Rio

The bikini, as we know it today, was officially launched in Paris in 1946 by French designer Louis Réard. In Rio de Janeiro, it began to gain popularity from the 1950s onwards. Brazilian Helô Pinheiro helped popularize the bikini in the 1960s when she was immortalized as the "Girl from Ipanema" in the famous song by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes.

In the 1980s, the thong bikini gained notoriety in Brazil, especially on Rio's beaches, with the city playing a crucial role in this trend. Alcindo Pereira da Silva, known as Cidinho do Bumbum, was one of the pioneers in creating the thong bikini, which garnered significant attention.

Since then, the bikini has always been a staple in carioca life. For me, the desire to wear it grew with the changes in my body, my self-discovery, and gender perceptions. After all, who does not wish to feel powerful and free in their body while wearing a bikini?
